About

Garcia Street Books was founded in 1991.

Edward and Eva Borins, who have over thirty years of bookselling experience and are former owners of Edwards Books & Art, one of Canada’s largest independent bookstore chains, moved to Santa Fe in 1997 and purchased the shop in May of 2000.

Garcia Street Books has been voted the Best Independent Bookstore in Santa Fe by the readers of the Santa Fe Reporter six years in a row.

Garcia Street Books is privileged to be the bookseller at Lannan Foundation events (www.lannan.org) that have included authors authors such as Seamus Heaney, Annie Proulx, Nadine Gordimer, Michael Ondaatje, Gore Vidal, Mary Oliver, and Billy Collins.

In Toronto, Edwards Books & Art hosted Sophia Loren, Sting, Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Margaret Atwood, Gloria Steinem, Chuck Norris, Michael Ondaatje, artist Robert Bateman, hockey player Ken Dryden, and Nobel Laureate I. B. Singer.

In Santa Fe, visitors have included nationally renowned authors such as Maureen Dowd, Eve Ensler, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda, Bud Collins, Sherman Alexie, Jorge Ramos, Stuart Woods, Jeffrey Deaver, James Lee Burke, Jodi Picoult, Wendell Berry, Dr. Leonard Shlain, Wen Ho Lee, Judy Chicago, Jorge Ramos, Marianne Wiggins, Pulitzer Award-winning political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.

Many of the Santa Fe community’s prominent local authors have launched their books at Garcia Street Books, including Governor Bill Richardson, the late Ambassador Frank Ortiz, mystery writer Michael McGarrity, artists Bill Barrett and Forrest Moses, anthropologist Dr. Barbara Tedlock, Rabbi Malka Drucker, and John Pen La Farge.

Garcia Street Books has recently sponsored two successful benefits.

1. Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson presented their latest works, The Year of the Flood and The Bedside Book of Beasts, at a benefit for WildEarth Guadians and Wild Watersheds, Novemmber 17, 2009 at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.

2. Greg Mortsenson discussed his newest New York Times bestseller, Stones Into Schools, his work in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and his sudden international fame following the publication of his first book, Three Cups of Tea. Proceeds went to support Greg Mortenson’s organization, Pennies for Peace.

Our next sponsored event will be for Eve Ensler’s new book, I am an Emotional Creature. We are proud to support Ms. Ensler again after the 2007 V-Day International launch of her A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer.

In addition to author events, Garcia Street Books has a strong focus on books on art, architecture, lifestyle, design, quality literature, poetry, and the Southwest.

A unique feature of the store is the annual summer exhibition and sale of museum quality artists’ books, courtesy of Ursus Rare Books in New York. Deluxe limited editions by modern masters, such as Picasso, Matisse, and Miro, containing original graphics are available for viewing and purchasing.

Throughout the year, exhibitions of artists’ books by Mexican and New Mexican artists are given. The interest generated by these exhibitions has resulted in the creation of a strong selection of books on books and bookmaking.

Garcia Street Books has received national media acclaim for its large selection of sale books, specializing in books on art, photography, the Southwest, cooking, travel, literature, and lifestyle. These titles are the same books that sold at full price, except that they are offered at a fraction of their original published price. Visit our sale tables inside the store and under our portal and discover an array of bargain books, including rare and out of print art books, or the literary treasure you were searching for.

Garcia Street Books is located in the heart of Santa Fe’s Historical East Side, in a cultural oasis, surrounded by a photography bookstore and gallery, and a cafe/magazine shop, where visitors mingle with the locals on the outdoor patio.
